It started with a pair of rescues. Their names were Kirby and Spanky. They were white, male rats with black hoods. They were huge, and we fell in love. When Kirby was very old, he got a respiratory infection and passed away. We found someone to adopt Spanky, thinking we were done with rats, at least for a while.
Then two more male rats needing homes showed up on a local classifieds website. One was white with a mink hood, the other, a Russian blue rex. We adopted them, naming them Spoon and Wafer. Wafer was a pet store rat and got a tumor, leaving Spoon behind. This time, we couldn't stand the empty cage.
We contacted Adelaide's Rattery, Addicted to Rats, and went to pick up two more boys. But who can visit the cutest little rats in the world and only adopt two? We adopted four that day, and another one a few weeks later. Then two more boys needed rescuing, and we took them in too.
Kirby's Rattery is home to nine naughty little male rats: Spoon (Russian blue rex), Tank (white with black mask), Scooter (dumbo velveteen Berkshire), Twist (our Wafer lookalike, white with mink hood), Bolt (white with black hood and white head stripe), Soda (rex Berkshire), Chili (white rex with blue hood), Poof (white with agouti hood), and Ninja (white with black hood).
So, if all we have is boys, why do we call ourselves a rattery? We have planned a breeding between Spoon, who is getting on in years, and another local lady rat, and hopefully in the future, we will breed other boys too.
